I think I'd have some issues with a painter who decided to use a different color and let me know afterwards. I'd make sure I made it clear that next time he calls you before he changes something from your instructions. He may well be right and probably has a better handle on what ultimately will look good, but as the owner you still deserve the right to say yea or nay.
