This is discussed a lot here. If you have a good title and the number on the title doesn't match the number behind the distributor, the engine has probably been changed. If the number doesn't match, or you don't have a title, you'll need to contact your state's titling agency to determine their procedure for assigning a VIN to the vehicle. The number on your data plate were it there would have been the vehicle serial number.
