Wouldn't modern side glass be safety laminated and not tempered and therefore a completely different animal?
There was a long thread on this topic at hotrodders if I recall correctly started by Brian several years ago. If my gray matter is working correctly I seem to remember the final decision (supported by some professionals) was that while you may occasionally succeed, the majority of the time when the tempered glass cooled down it would shatter.
