Some thoughts from a non-engineer. Oil molecules are massaged with additives until they are long and tubular...like the balloons they twist poodle dog shapes out of. As the molecules do their thing, sometimes they are sheared in the line of duty and become shorter. They have the ability to reconnect, but not all do. If the long, new molecules couldn't fit into a tight clearance, that fit might wear a bit more than if the older, shorter molecules were present. Could this be what that statement was referring to? I think this is sort of how it might work!!
