This exact thing just happened to me yesterday on a '58 **** 601 tractor. I also have a '52 GMC 6x6 with this engine but it has a Holley 2-V carb.
Remove the fuel line where it attaches to the carb, empty the float bowl, fill half full or slightly more with spray carb cleaner. reattach fuel line and run for a few minutes. This usually works. If the main jet is plugged with dirt this may work and it may not.
Todays junk gasoline will gum a carb out of operation in about three months especially if you let the gas tank get low. If your gas is old drain it all out and put in fresh.
