The way we did it "back in the day" was to set the seat to where you could push up on the back of the steering wheel with your knees, put one hammer on the shaft (after removing the nut of course), and whacking the top of the first hammer with another hammer. Worked great. Now that I have old knees I use my harmonic balancer puller with "J" bolts to hook over the arms of the steering wheel. That works great too. Just make sure the "J" bolts are as close to the hub as you can get them to minimize the strain on the steering wheel.
