John has the right idea, dad. You might not know it, but you want a flatdeck made from tongue-and-groove 2x6 boards over timber crossmembers, held together with 3/8 carriage bolts. Do that right and it'll work for years if you want it to. You can even make sideboards if you desperately wand a box.
