First regarding carrier. I've heard (never tried myself) that the 4.10 gear can fit any carrier. However, nobody sells the gears alone, so why not buy the whole pumpkin and put it in, then no worry.
They used to sell the 3.90 gears, but I don't think they've had them available for years. You did need the later carrier for these gears.
They did make a 17 spline "locker" for these pumpkins. They are NOT common. However, you can buy a detroit locker built for the 14 bolt GM axle, and buy some correct length 14 bolt axle shafts (from Patricks for instance) and install both of them in this axle.
The above is a REALLY STRONG setup. More like a 1 1/2 ton axle. The 4x4 guys been doing this for a while, cause it's strong, it's a full floater, it's light, and it's got pretty decent ground clearance. Only thing they really need is the 5.13 gear from the 1 ton axle. Fairly rare.
