Here's a problem with casting numbers, and this is irritating as hell! My 250 block has numbers that could be a 250 or a 230. My head has numbers that could be a 250 or a 292. The only reason I knew for sure it's a 250 is because it's an original engine in a 1970, and therefore can't be a 230; plus I know some of the trucks history. The casting numbers ID just won't tell you with 100% certainty. Fortunately most of the external bolt-ons are the same on these engines except the 292 uses a longer distributor. Unless you need internal parts you shouldn't have any real problems. If you work on internals you can find out for sure when you tear it down. If it's the original 1964 engine, it's a 230, but on these old trucks one tends to find numerous surprises!
