A common misconception is that the first Chevrolet was designed by Louis Chevrolet, the famous race car driver. He designed a luxury auto that would be too expensive to build to compete with Ford. Billy Durant wanted to compete with Ford so Chevrolet's designs never saw production. This led to Chevrolet's eventual departure but he couldn't take his name with him. Durant owned it.
