I have built several gas tanks. The last on was formed at a sheetmetal shop out of 14 gauge black. Anything heavier in gauge gets you a tank like Cletis noted...VERY heavy.
I wouldn't build one if there were a factory tank available. The commercially built tank would be lighter, leak free, well baffled, and I will bet cheaper in the long run.
