So a '53 bed should easily clear the kickup...
The length is also a little different.
I think you can do it. I'm not as sure why you would want to. Anyone knowledgable looking at it will immedately know its the wrong bed. Any stepside bed starting in '54 and at least 20 years, is the same design. You might find it easier to look a little broader, and then move the fenders from the '53 bed to your new bed.
