I got a 4" total drop from "factory stock" in the rear of my '49 1/2 ton with 3" lowered leaf springs and 1" +/- from the conversion kit (to open driveline). I did not need to notch the frame. To be honest though, the "lowered" leaf springs raised the rear end an inch from the old sagging spring. Gazim is right though if you are wanting something more extreme.
