Hey 58 apache,according to inliners for block casting number 3837012 it is listed as 216 engine for Chevrolet 1942 to 1951.
It is also listed as 55-57 261 just as you say.
Go back to inliners and make a second check and look for 42-51 216. I have been checking casting numbers on inliners and that is the first time I can recall where the same casting number is given for two different engines.
Theoreticly you can check the date code on the distributor pad and decifer the year.
