I'm not Kimberly and I've not done either of these mods, but do have some idea what they take.
To use a later automatic you need an adapter.
Stovebolt Engine Company and
Buffalo (search for Buffalo) are the ones I hear the most about.
I've heard of people cutting the stock column, inserting a bearing in the end of it, and then using a u-joint to make it possible to attach the original column to a power steering box.
I'm sure you could do the reverse to use the original box with a new column. Unless you changed the orientation of the column you would not need a universal, but instead something like the rag joints used to buffer the column from the box in a 70's car.
The part of this I'd be most concerned about would be sealing the top of the column, to make sure nothing got in the steering box that doesn't belong...
