We used a wire fence normally for a horse, we just put it all around our yard. Every morning you'd have to go out, and they would be about 15 BIG ol rats hanging from the wire, dead still, with teeth still attached. Animals will run into it once, then never do that again.
Oh and if you have cats, they're good at chasing them towards the wire thing...
