Paul's right about synthetics.
Don't know what you have in it for oil now. I'd start by using a straight oil, SAE 30 or 40, depending on how far north you are. Also, put in a can of Restore, it might help. If not, I'd go with STP, but put it in a hot, running engine. I hate the stuff, but consider it a last resort to put off a rebuild.
