My German is from war movies with subtitles. My Spanish is from mission trips to Bolivia, my Japanese from working with Japanese people(and war movies), my French from high school 30 years ago, any my Latin and Italian from similarity to French and Spanish. I think God just gave me a gift for picking up the lingo.
I love to get dropped into a situation where I have to communicate with someone where there's a language barrier. The last time I was in Bolivia, I had a conversation for hours with the guy next to me on the plane coming home. He spoke no English and I only speak a little Spanish, but with the electronic translator, and pictures and lots of hand language, we did really well.
And If I would have known the German word for "rule" I would not have said "Ja, TruckedUp?" I would have said, "Ist das nicht ein 'rule' TruckedUp?"
