Do you have a V8 or six? IF V8, do you have an air cleaner with a preheater stove on one of the manifolds? Make sure the diverter valve is opening (it is either thermostatic or vacuum controlled). It sounds like maybe your intake charge gets too hot and you are loosing power because of it, or the choke is not opening all the way. Otherwise check the coil. What carb are you running? If it is a quadrajet there is a lockout to prevent the secondaries from opening unless the choke is open all the way.
If it is a six, make sure the manifold heat diverter valve isn't stuck closed.
