Just to make this thread useful information for some one with the same problem, the fix was easy. Come to find out, the end of the release rod was against the floormat, which constantly held the brake lever in "release" position.
The fix:
I just unhooked the release rod, then bent the arm that catches on the emergency brake pedal upward slightly. Now it works great!
