If you can find it, the old black silk suture thread seems to work well on leather. My dad's a vet, and someone gave him a ton of it in different sizes years ago. It just sat around until I realized it was some of the best repair thread ever invented. I'll look around and see if anyone sells it on eBay. The brand I have is Ethicon.
