"Deflectors"- - - - - -the thin sheet metal rings about 1/2" tall that are sandwiched between the top of the valve spring and the spring retainer on some engines. They work with the O ring at the top of the valve stem under the split locks to keep oil from puddling on top of the valve guide. If a positive seal that clamps on top of the guide is used in addition to the O ring and the deflector, the guide will be starved for lubrication and it will wear out quickly.
