Gear oil uses a different system of measurement to determine viscosity. It is completely unrelated to motor oil viscosity numbers.
250W gear oil is roughly equivalent to an SAE 60+ straight-grade motor oil. It's used for extremely heavy, load-bearing differentials and heavy duty standard transmissions. Think of mining equipment like giant dump trucks.
