Kevin's diagram from the FAM is a 1954 specific steering wheel setup. There are a few differences between it and your '53 as yours will have the upper steering column bearing/horn contact piece and a different looking wheel and horn button & contact ring.

Here's a picture from a 1953 Chevy Master Parts Book showing the typical truck steering wheel parts exploded diagram. Please note it is not a 100% match to your '53 as it shows an earlier 1941-46 setup. The retainer, bumper and spring shown don't go with your '53.

A closer approximation of what your '53 has can be seen if you look at the below LMC catalog diagram. Yours will include items 1 (steering wheel), 11 (upper steering column bearing and horn contact), 14 (spring loaded horn contact button), 15 (horn button contact cup), 17 (steering wheel to shaft nut - yes there should be a washer in there), and 18 (horn button).

Maybe a little less muddy? headscratch
