What I normally do, is decide what is the most that I am willing to pay for the item before the bidding starts. Sometimes, I may add another 5 or 10 percent if I really want it. I will bid up to my maximum, and if that isn't enough, I just let someone else have it.
I will not allow myself to get caught up in a bidding war. That is a good way to pay too much.
