Thanks for the responses. Good information! I'm not planning on tearing out my system as it has served me well for the past several years.
However, I will take some precautions. Have decided to set up a special "ball pien hammer-throwing area" outside of the shop.
As you mentioned, a little common sense can go a long way in reducing the chances for a catastrophic event. When you think about it, it's amazing that growing up without car safety seats, bike helmets, the USDA, EPA, OSHA and the government monitoring our every move, that any of us have survived. Ain't progress wonderful?
