As some may recognize from another posting I am in process of modifying my front hubs for my "50 3600 to use 9/16" threaded studs.

In the process of removing the existing studs I found that there is a sheet metal backing plate that is captured by the studs on the backside of the hub. It has a gasket between the sheet metal and the hub. There is a formed area that seems to connect a hole in the hub to area near the spindle bearing seal.

Anyone know what function the sheet metal backing plate is intended to provide? It seems like it may have been a means to introduce grease into the bearing area except as it currently sits the inner bearing seal would prevent it from serving any obvious function.

If I need to have the holes in the plate opened up to accept the new larger diameter wheel studs for some function I will but otherwise I probably will just leave it off.
