The GM truck splines are the same from 40's to 90's. What do you mean by "modern" and what do you hope to gain? just a little better look? The adapters you speak of are for wheels/colums like Ididit. So depending on if you use a donor Chevy/GMC truck wheel or aftermarket custom wheel, you may or may not need an adapter.
As said: the smaller the wheel the more lever force is needed. A steering wheel is a lever.
