A little more info to back up Kevin's report. Block casting# 3836233 is listed for 1955-57 Chevrolet 235's. The block casting date info and "55" in the serial number confirms it's a 1955 engine. The head casting# 3835913 is listed as used on 1954-57 235's (has the small temp sensor hole).
The "Y" at the end of the serial# confirms it was originally an "automatic transmission" (Powerglide) passenger car engine from data in the GM Heritage files (extract pic provided below). These were originally outfitted with hydraulic cam & lifters.
