The socket is the same. The heating element in the actual cigarette lighter is different between 6v and 12 volt.
I use mine to charge phones, ear pods and previously an old Garmin GPS unit. I fused the lighter socket at 5 amps to support these smaller loads and then ripped the heating element out of the lighter to insure someone wouldn't push it in which would cause the small fuse to blow.
