Both styles of shaft have been used pretty much interchangeably in 230, 250, and 292 engines. I'm partial to the solid shaft models, as I've seen a couple of sectional shafts break when a high volume oil pump is used. A small modification of the housing is necessary if the HEI is used in a 216, 235, or 261 engine to make sure the oil pump drive and drive gear engagement is at the correct depth.
