I would stick with a popular brand like Miller, Lincoln, Esab, or HTP. Buy the biggest machine you can.

I bought a Millermatic 251 with a 15A spoolgun a couple years ago. I could have bought a cheaper or smaller welder, but this machine will weld ANYTHING I choose to tackle.

I am not personally impressed with the 110v welders--they might be all right for fenders but I wouldn't trust them welding anything structural. I can turn my big welder down to weld thin metal, but you can't turn up a small welder to adequately weld thick metal.
