Yes Kevin, Hard faced hammers can really do some damage to a hardened steel face plate.
The really cheap anvils are actually cast iron and the horn or tail will break off if hit real hard with a sledge.
The one you show may be all cast iron, with the way it is chipped out around the hardy hole and how clean the saw cuts look. Plus the chip pockets in the face look to be all cast iron.
Don't get me wrong, anvils like that can really be a plus in a shop, if a good solid surface is needed to do some minor adjustment on things.
