I use a short length of railroad rail (my makeshift anvil) on a bath towel to protect the paint. I put the rail in place after I put the 4" block in place, but before I loosen the hinge bolts.
As you loosen the hinge bolts, the weight of the rail will lower the hood down where it belongs.
One other thing I do to simplify things is to remove the outside hinge bolts completely rather than just loosen them.
