In many of them, the cable first goes through the clamp (and the Rochester can be made to work on the Carter) and then the wire portion goes through the hole in the linkage rod (where normally a cotter pin goes) and there is a screw-tightened clamp on the bottom of the cable. Then you adjust by moving the outer part up/down and tightening the clamp and/or moving the clamp on the wire portion as needed.
