In your mind, does it somehow seem necessary to ground a gas tank?
The OP expressed that it was necessary to ground his tank. I had horrible thoughts of him drilling a hole in his tank for a ground strap.
That is why I clarified the sole purpose of the ground under a sending unit hold down screw was to ground the sending unit.
