You didn't mention if you had the intake ground. I had the same problem with my 228 GMC. I made sure that I had a good fit between the intake and exhaust part of the manifold, and bolted it together. Then had the intake and exhaust manifold milled as one unit. I did grind the 3 steel rings down to allow for a true flat fit. It worked great, no intake or exhaust leaks. Also used a new fel-pro gasket.
