Sorry, had to Edit. Failed to realize this motor is no longer being used and is a rhetorical question.
My guess it was gas cap not venting. You would run it without a gas cap for awhile to test. I never figured out if the old timers suggestion did anything.
I do not think it was the pertronix.
Where is the motor now?
