Don't those np 540 boxes have provisions for pto on both sides?
Yes the NP-540 has the PTO provisions on both sides.
The drivers side runs off of the reverse idler gear.
The passenger side runs off of the second speed counter gear.
With that said, I believe the PTO driven gears would be different based on which side you mounted the PTO.
PTO's could be bought with the output shaft pointing forward or backwards, gear reduction/high torque, 2-speed, forward and reverse etc. Most older dump hoists and wrecker winches used a single speed (one gear) PTO.
