That keeps the pressure drop in the canister to a minimum, since oil that goes through the filter gets dumped back into the oil pan. Oil filters were optional equipment- - - -the engine gets lubricated the same way with or without a filter installed. Even if the filter gets installed dry, the canister fills in a few seconds after an oil and filter change on the first startup. Check the oil level and top it off to the full mark on the dipstick after a few minutes of run time. Jerry
