The only disadvantage to that system becomes obvious in case the engine stalls for some reason. Then both steering and braking becomes a "phase 10 panic" situation. Some of the Ford medium duty truck hydraulic boost systems used a battery-powered hydraulic pump for emergency braking- - - -not sure if it also helped steer.
