Jon’s solution is likely more effective and better looking than my theorized solution. On my “when I get around to it” list is to grind some width out of the widely available SBC valve cover spreaders. I think they could be made to fit.
This is the kind of thing I’m talking about:

Based on advice given here, I have done “part” of the tech tip. The tinsmith work to flatten the bolt holes and my VC is glued to the head with Permatex super 300.
