Figure out which way makes the window go up. The spring is there to help it go up. Install it so it's pushing the arm upward. It should still have some tension in it with the regulator cranked all the way up

If you had taken a picture of the spring before you removed it, the question would have been answered. I have lots of pictures, but unfortunately not of a 37 window regulator.
