Hy Clutchheadstew, In those days spring brakes were rare, I suspect it was probably equipped with a driveshaft parking brake, probably a "Tru-Stop" either a single or double sided type. Is there something on the driveshaft or the tranny or the auxilliary that looks like a large disc brake rotor? Hope that helps.
