I took a "Cherry Bomb" sort of muffler off my truck when I bought it. It was pretty loud.

Off course open headers will do the job just fine. I had 72 SS Chevelle that I drove across town with open headers to get the exhaust put on professionally a number of years ago.

I think i might have suffered some hearing loss from the experience.
