The only bypass filter I've seen that's worth the effort to install it is the Frantz model that uses a roll of cheap toilet paper as an element. Some of the early Frantz conversions used the Fram or AC canister, with modified internal parts. Later, Frantz started selling their own polished stainless steel canister.

I like to use a spin-on Diesel fuel filter in a bypass configuration- - - -it strains out MUCH smaller particles than a regular original equipment type filter.
