Old grease will set up like road tar. When would work on old equipment that had been sitting in barns or out in the pasture for years, the hot wrench usually did the trick.
There is a gold colored grease, that is pretty much the ssme ad anti-seize that works pretty good. You may be able to find it at an industrial supply like Grainger or Fastenal.
