I also am no expert, but it seems they could come either way.
My 41 COE has it between the seats. If you look at Tim Glace's 41(gallery), it has the engine cover shifter. Optional? and then eventually standard equipment in 46? My 42 COE has the engine cover style on it.

Does your shifter bump the seats when you put it into reverse? I think I'm having space troubles. Maybe you could post a picture of your seat with shifter if you have a chance.
