For the 1957 model year, Chevy ditched the long serial code. So, looks like you have an engine manufactured at Flint MI on 12/23/56 (for the '57 model year). The '8' you specified on the end of the serial number is likely a 'B'? If it's a 'B' it would have been originally equipped with a Powerglide and should have hydraulic lifters. For confirmation on the year, check the conveyor number above the starter. Yours should be CON# L##6. The 6 at the end the conveyor number means it was made in 1956 (for 1957 model year).
I think this is correct, it's early and I haven't had my coffee yet...others will chime in if I'm off the mark!
