I have gone down that path on my 1950 3600 and you can find a thread about the challenges I have encountered. In the end I chose not to install power steering but it sounds like you have already decided to go that route.
From what I found the 68-76 steering gear conversion mounts in front of the axle, outside of the frame, and does require that the front shocks be relocated to behind the axle (swapping driver's side and passenger side mounts in the process). The steering column needs to be recreated with appropriate joints, shaft extension, etc. to attach to the steering gear.
There are a number of threads regarding use of electric assist steering rather than traditional power steering. One word of caution is that in my case the original manual steering gear needed to be relocated outward over 2" to clear the exhaust manifolds I chose. There are a number of exhaust manifold options that may not interfer and others have had significnatly less interefernce than I experienced.
